Boston is back. The '70s-era rock band is on a 48-city nationwide tour, the first time its hit the road in six years.
Guitarist, producer and songwriter Tom Scholz and original lead singer Brad Delp joined forces to tour in support of the band's fifth album, Corporate America. The last tour the record-breaking band did was in support of 1997's Greatest Hits record. Prior to that, it toured in 1995 for Walk On.
"Tours are actually sort of few and far between," Mr. Delp said during a phone interview from his southern New Hampshire home, about one hour outside of Boston, the city.
The tour began June 6 in Manchester, N.H. Although 48 cities in 10 weeks is a bit rigorous, Mr. Delp, 52, is looking forward to it.
"I always think it's great," said Mr. Delp, who sang on the first three Boston albums. "How many people even get a chance to do this? And especially (after) all the time between the records, I have to be really grateful to a loyal fan base. Whenever we go out, no matter how long it is between records, it seems that Boston fans are right there with us."
Since Boston's last tour, Mr. Scholz, "the main entity of Boston" as Mr. Delp puts it, has been working on Corporate America. The band decided it was time to hit the road again when the last track was finished.
"Everyone has plenty of time to do other things, except for Tom," Mr. Delp said of Mr. Scholz, who recorded the album in his home studio. "Tom pretty much sequesters himself in the studio and doesn't come out until it's done. And when it is finished, you can imagine he can't wait now to play the stuff live. That's the other side of him gets the chance to come out."
Although he's excited to perform the new material live, Mr. Delp won't leave the classic Boston chart-toppers in the dark.
"We don't have a huge catalog of albums, so when we go out on tour, we'll obviously be playing almost everything off the first record, and a lot of stuff off of all the other records," Mr. Delp said. "But I'm looking forward to playing some of these that maybe people haven't had a chance to hear off of Corporate America."
Some Corporate America singles include Someone, Livin' for You and I Had a Good Time. Fans may also hear the title track, which is lyrically and musically one of Mr. Delp's favorites from the album.
"Boston isn't known for writing political songs and this was something that Tom felt very strongly about," Mr. Delp said. "The song itself was a number of years in the making and recording and he felt strongly enough about it to make it the title tune of the record. He felt he had something to say and I certainly agree with him."
In addition to new Boston tunes, fans also will experience a new lineup. In addition to the late '80 combo of Mr. Delp, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Mr. Scholz, vocalist/guitarist Fran Cosmo and guitarist/keyboardist/backing vocalist Gary Pihl, there are three new members: bassist/vocalist Kim-berley Dahme, guitarist/backing vocalist Anthony Cosmo (Fran Cosmo's son) and drummer Jeff Neal.
